Each year around this time the Pantone people announce the color of the year, and the 2014 color is Radiant Orchid!

As apartment dwellers, sometimes it is difficult to think of ways to bring color into your apartment without paint.  Although many of our communities offer an accent wall, our basic colors by design are pretty neutral. So here are 7 ways to bring color into your apartment---without paint!

  1. Pillows- so cheap, but so WOW.  You can actually make your own pillows or head over to TJ Maxx and find them in a color that suits you.  For the best effect, pick a color at the opposite side of the color wheel from your current colors, if you do not have a neutral couch.  This will complement without clashing.  To make your own pillows without sewing, look for felt or other fabrics that do not ravel and cover the pillows you have using stitch witch.

  2. Wall hangings- Modern art is particularly helpful to add color to a neutral apartment. You can make it yourself by taping off uneven sections of a huge canvas and then painting the whole thing one or more colors.  The tape lines remain white and create a striking work of art for very little.  Another alternative is to cover a canvas with leftover fabric from making your pillows.  Check your lease first, all of our apartments allow you to hang pictures on the walls without making repairs at the end of your stay, but some communities do not.

  3. Paint the inside of bookcases or other furniture- If you have large bookcases, you can paint or paper the inside of the shelves.  You can also do the inside of your entertainment center or desk unit.  This adds color that you can change out at any time.

  4. Flowers-Not only do flowers add color to any apartment, but they also bring life into the space.  You don’t have to spend a ton at a florist, our local grocery stores sell pretty bunches you can throw in a vase and be done.

  5. Throw rugs- Our communities have carpet, but that’s not stopping you from adding a nice rug in a bright color to define your space and add color to your home.

  6. Towels- Do you have the same towels that your mom gave you when you moved out?  It’s time to upgrade and a great opportunity to brighten up the bathroom.  Redecorating this space is very inexpensive and can add a little brightness to your morning routine.

  7. Curtains- If you are in an apartment, there is no sense getting custom curtains made for our very standard windows!  You can make or buy curtains and we will help you hang them.

There are many ways to add color to your Hamtpon Roads apartment without commitment and we hope you take a moment to check out Radiant Orchid and see if it fits in with your style!
