On October 21st, Signature Management Corporation's staff and employees from all eight of our properties in Hampton Roads, including our properties in York County and Williamsburg, participated in the American Cancer Society's annual fundraiser and survivor celebration, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Hampton Roads.
An estimated 25 employees and family members participated in the walk after spending several weeks raising funds to be matched in full by Signature Management's corporate office. Altogether, the Signature Management team raised $2,390 to fight breast cancer, and walked in celebration and remembrance of those whose lives have been affected by this disease.
Signature Management's team was made up of several participants whose lives have been directly affected by breast cancer, and our company was honored to walk in support of their fight and in celebration of their courage. We are proud to support the Hampton Roads chapter of the American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and encourage others to learn more about their important work in our community and in the fight against cancer.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer began in 1984, when cancer survivor, Margie Gould Rath, wanted to celebrate fellow cancer survivors while raising funds for the American Cancer Society. The first event was held in Boston with 200 participants, and the walk quickly became an annual event that drew large crowds in the city. In September 1993, the event officially became known at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, attracting more than 4,000 walkers throughout Boston, Manchester and New Hampshire. Since then, the walk has evolved and spread to 145 communities throughout the country, inspiring nearly 4 million walkers and raising more than $340 million dollars to fight breast cancer. Margie continued to volunteer with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer until she lost her battle to cancer in 2001. Today, her legacy and vision live on through this remarkable annual event.
